A Virtuoso…there was much to enjoy. — Heuwell Tircuit, San Francisco Chronicle

Walter Cosand is a wonderful pianist. He has a beautiful tone; an ability to navigate the most fiendish technical passages; a steely touch for dramatic moments, balanced by a liquid, sensitive touch in more coloristic ones. He plays the works on this twentieth-century American program with the assurance and fullness of sound that most pianists bring to Chopin. And perhaps just as important, he seems to have real artistic integrity in his tastes and programming … All the music is very difficult (the Rorem especially so), and Cosand is able to adapt his technique to the varied demands of each composer. In the slow movement of the Cohen, he coaxes out a wide range of beautiful colors; in the Aschaffenburg, he gives the dissonant lines a drive and phrasing that invest them with motoric power; in the Matthews, he creates a surging, expansive sonority. His performance of the Rorem is really spectacular.
He deserves a wide audience and the opportunity for further recordings. This recording is recommended above all for the artistry of the performer.— Robert Carl, Fanfare
